The Harborfields High School varsity cheerleading team participated last month at the UCA Summer Instructional Camp in upstate New York and earned five Blue Ribbons for Excellence, which is the competition’s highest honor. In addition, Senior Amber Belus was one of 20 cheerleaders to receive an All-Star Medal.

“This is a group of young ladies that really set the tone of spirit for our school, so it’s nice to see them get some recognition,” said Principal David Bennardo.

According to Coach Kristen Gavin, Harborfields practiced nearly 12 hours a day at the four-day camp, while competing against 25 schools in cheering, dancing and other areas.

“Other schools had a history of cheerleading success, so we were really excited,” said Belus, 16, noting that her teammates have only been working together for two years.
