Maryann Daley of Huntington Intermediate School is one of 10 teachers statewide to receive a Siemens Science Teachers Award. She was chosen for "going the extra mile" to motivate students through hands-on science projects.

"There really aren’t enough interactive projects in our schools today," said Daley, a 24-year veteran of the school. "Hands-on projects help kids to remember more easily."

Daley was nominated for the award by the New York Hall of Science, which hosted 28 science labs at the school after Daley secured a $3,500 grant. Following that process, she convinced the district to include the labs, which cover topics like floating and electricity, in its annual budget.

"You write grants hoping to have a lasting effect, and it’s great when they do," said Daley, who will be honored during an awards dinner on September 20.
