Residents are invited to watch area youth participate in a mock trial put on by the Town of Huntington Youth Court and other Suffolk County Youth Court programs in honor of “National Youth Court Month.”

This year’s theme is “Empowering Youth Experiencing Justice.” The proceedings will be held Wednesday, September 19th from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Bellport High School Auditorium in Brookhaven. Youth volunteers from Huntington, Brookhaven and Southampton will participate.

The event will provide a firsthand opportunity to see what Huntington’s Youth Court volunteers are doing to help other youth that commit crimes.

According to town officials the goal of Youth Court is to prevent delinquent behavior through positive peer influence, strengthen self-esteem and instill motivation for self-improvement and a sense of community involvement among youth.

Participating youth gain experience with the legal process, become familiar with the court system and learn about various career opportunities as they perform the roles of prosecuting and defending attorney, judge, bailiff and jury.

Membership in Huntington’s program is open to any student between 14-18 years old. A voluntary one year commitment is required and a multi-week training program is provided.
