The Huntington Wellness Center wants to “rub out” domestic hunger this weekend, along with a few back spasms as well.

The second annual event, entitled “Rub Out Hunger,” will give free chair massages to anyone who donates a bag of nonperishable food items. Last year’s food drive raised over 400 pounds of food.

“We’re hoping for a big turnout,” said Ron Sandoval, the center’s acupuncturist. “Hunger on Long Island is growing at an alarming rate, and something needs to be done.”

According to Sandoval, Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank is lending the center a collection of containers, which will remain all week for visitors to drop off food. This means anyone can pitch in even if they can’t come on Saturday, Sandoval emphasized.

“We’d really love to improve on last year’s figures, if possible,” he explained. “But this is something we’d continue to do regardless of the numbers.”

Specifically, more than 259,000 Long Islanders – including nearly 93,000 children and 39,000 seniors – are hungry and the rate is growing, according to Hunger in America.

The food drive is slated for noon-4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, contact the Huntington Wellness Center at 631-424-8601.
