Coffee spill leads to death in Greenlawn

A car being driven by a man who spilled coffee on his lap struck and killed an 84-year-old woman in Greenlawn last night, according to police.

Bradley Dorman, 48, of 20 Bowdon Road, Greenlawn, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu north on Oberlon Drive around 7:55 p.m. when he spilled a cup of coffee in his lap and became distracted. The car veered off the roadway and struck a mailbox at 5 Oberlon Drive. Dorman recovered control of the car and started to pull back onto the roadway and struck Kate Porto in front of 7 Oberlon Drive, police said.

Porto, 84, of 2 Oberlon Drive, Greenlawn, had been walking south on Oberlon Drive. She was taken to Huntington Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Dorman was issued a traffic summons for failing to exercise due care while operating a motor vehicle.
