Huntington votes to reduce cigarette ads

The town of Huntington is sending out a letter to cigarette retailers in town asking them to reduce tobacco advertising at their stores and remove it from areas likely to be seen by children.

The letter follows a vote last week by the town council on a resolution asking retailers to voluntarily follow the recommendations of the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island on tobacco advertising.

The resolution, sponsored by council member Mark Cuthbertson and passed unanimously, urges retailers “to reduce overall tobacco advertising in their place of business and to eliminate tobacco advertising from areas likely to be seen by children, including wall space below five feet and on counter tops.”

Marianne Zacharia, community resource manager for the coalition, testified on behalf of the resolution before the council vote on Tuesday night.

“We are asking other towns on Long Island to sign this as well,” Zacharia said later. “We are working with both the Nassau and Suffolk Health Departments to send a brochure to all tobacco retailers which will outline the existing tobacco sales laws and educate them on how point-of-purchase advertising influences children to attempt to purchase these products.”
